Sacramento Pikeminnow

Identification: There are two similar fish species to the Sacramento Pikeminnow within it´s range, the Hardhead and the Sacramento Splittail. The best way to tell them apart is that the pikeminnow has a much larger mouth than the other two species as well as not having a tail that is as long as a Splittail. Also, if you look at their mouth the top jaw can extend out where as the top jaw on the other species is locked in place.

Size: Up to around three feet in length, however the biggest one I have ever seen was a 27 inch fish at Willow Creek at Lake Natoma

Range: Sacramento Pikeminnow are found mainly in creeks and rivers of the central valley and there is also invasive population of them in the eel river system.
