Rainbow Trout

Identification:  Rainbow trout are a pretty distinctive fish that is easy to identify. When you look at a rainbow trout you will see a silver bodied fish that has a dark green back and lots of black dots. These trout also have a pink lateral line on their sides that is usually easy to see. You can tell a wild rainbow from a stocked rainbow when you look at their lower fins and if you see white on the fins it is a wild fish.

Size: rainbow trout can reach around 40 inches long but the average size rainbow is around 16 inches. Steelhead are an anadromous form of  rainbow trout and reach around 8 to 20 pounds as their average size

Range:  Rainbow trout are found pretty much through out all of California, but most often are found in high elevation streams and rivers or in deep lakes in low elevation areas.
